‘Reaching the Line’ is a twentieth-century work of fiction following the life of Abby Sutton, from the age of twelve to twenty-nine.  It begins in nineteen sixty-seven when we learn that Abby is a bed wetter and her sister has suffered a hemorrhage overnight and been taken to hospital. The following day, she is confronted by her sister’s school friends from the Girl’s Grammar school, which they both attend.

Abby is a chubby pre-teenager and suffers bullying from her narcissistic older sister, who incites others to do the same. All Abby wants is a sister who treats her with some love and respect. Her sister, Ronny, is discharged home and has been commenced on the Pill. A new contraceptive. The family goes on holiday to France and Spain, and we find out that Ronny is sexually promiscuous, and Abby is forced to enable her. We learn now that their mother has an illness. Ronny forms a relationship with Patty’s brother Kevin, and Abby constantly has to keep their secret under the threat of physical violence.

Due to their mother’s illness, their parents leave the two girls’ homes alone for a week. Ronny has the run of the house with her boyfriend Kevin, and his friends, leaving Abby alone to carry on without supervision. Abby meets her first boyfriend, but the relationship doesn’t last as Abby cannot bring herself to introduce him to Ronny.

Abby is offered holiday work at the local post office, where she works for the next three summers as the girls grow older. Each year she saves her money to buy herself something special. Ronny decides to use the magazine Phillip gave her for Christmas to punish Abby by cutting her long blonde hair to an inch over her head, stating she saw it in the magazine. She wants to have her hair cut, too, as all the girls at school compliment Abby.

Ronny contrives to visit the hairdressers. She needs money and notices that Abby is being paid by her mother to do household chores. She tries this too but complains about the low wage. She then asks Abby to advance her, and Abby relents.

Abby realizes she hasn’t seen her friend, Patty, for a few weeks and asks Kevin about her. He tells her a lie about his sister’s whereabouts which Abby continues to believe until she meets Patty again at Ronny and Kevin’s wedding. It becomes clear to Abby that Ronny is projecting her own thoughts and behavior onto her.
